Coaching Services

Coaching is a one-on-one experience between you and me, spanning anywhere from a single session to multiple. In these meetings, you can typically make them about any part of the writing process: brainstorming, accountability, worldbuilding, plotting, characters, revision—I will be there for you at any step you need a little extra push and some immediate feedback.

The Wallflower offers coaching focusing on four different areas:

Outline Consultation

Outlines are great (and many would argue crucial!). Whether super detailed or bare-bones, they offer stepping stones to guide you through your novel, keeping your goals in sight and letting you see your book from a birds-eye perspective. A solid outline is the key to a solid first draft.

Except . . . what if the outline isn’t solid? Are there plot holes you can’t see? Do your planned scenes complement your main character’s journey?

Sometimes a second pair of eyes and a lively conversation about your book is a great way to quell those doubts. That’s why this 1-session consultation is all about the outline: It includes a detailed read and analysis of your outline and a 1.5-hour coaching session to answer any remaining questions, help you flesh that manuscript out (while keeping your desired level of flexibility), and send you on your way into your first draft with confidence.

Includes:
-Editor pass of outline & writing sample (detailed read through + questions/comments).
-One (1) 1.5-hour video coaching session.
-A customized plan of action for you to revise your outline & start writing with confidence.
-Email support before/after session.

Brainstorming & Accountability

Let’s face it: writing is hard. Our one-on-one coaching calls will create a safe place for your ideas and skills to grow. I want you to feel comfortable detailing your writing projects and baring your doubts and uncertainties to me. Together, we’ll work through your project’s most challenging plot holes, character motives, and worldbuilding details so that it comes to life.

Need someone to hold you accountable? We can do that, too. We’ll create a schedule to keep you on-track while you draft, and we’ll discuss any challenges you’re facing to make sure the next time you sit down to write, you do so with confidence and a plan.

Includes:
-Four 1-hour video-chat coaching sessions over four, eight, or twelve weeks. Custom scheduling available upon request, and single coaching sessions are offered based on availability.
-A customized plan of action (1 per session) for you to accomplish by our next call to ensure you build and then keep that momentum.
-Email support between sessions, including post-session summaries, pre-session check-ins, and support for questions, successes, doubts, challenges, and more.

Revision

You wrote the book. But revising it? That’s a different beast.

What are your story’s strengths? What are its weaknesses? What have beta readers and critique partners had to say? Where do their suggestions agree and conflict? How do you know which notes to keep? Most importantly, where should you start?

Our one-on-one Revision coaching calls will help you approach your completed draft with the eye of an editor. We’ll look at where you are, where you want to go, and—most importantly—the steps you need to take to get there.

Writing a Fairy Tale Retelling

Retelling a tale as old as time? I can help with that.

Fairy tales are a unique form of storytelling that have survived centuries. Existing long before the Brothers Grimm immortalized them in print, they have evolved into one of the most popular genres today, spanning multiple generations and cultures, with retellings participating in a long tradition of stories that respond to societal change and both preserve and challenge expectations.

Our one-on-one Fairy Tale Retelling coaching calls will help you brainstorm and plot your fairy tale retelling, focusing on how your story diverges from social tradition and what new adventures it brings to the table.

-Resources unique to fairy tales, including articles, theories, analysis, and historical knowledge that relates to your fairy tale retelling.
-Email support between sessions, including post-session summaries, pre-session check-ins, and support for questions, successes, doubts, challenges, and more.

What Clients Have to Say

Rachel’s an amazing writing coach. I was stuck on a few plot points in my outline, and she helped me pick apart the problems and come up with seamless, meaningful solutions. She also asked deep-diving questions that I hadn’t considered before and made suggestions in areas that needed fleshing out. This novel is going to be more vibrant and engaging thanks to her help. I seriously can’t wait to write it.
—Elizabeth Arteaga, Grimdark Fantasy Author

Rachel is above and beyond an incredible coach and person you can trust with your story and characters. The resources, information, and guidance she provides is so helpful and motivating, and she puts so much care and consideration into her feedback and advice. She is excellent at being a second pair of eyes, connecting the dots, pointing out significant details, and offering advice and questions that always led me to multiple aha! moments while writing my story. I am much more confident as a writer and storyteller after our coaching sessions, and hope to continue working with her in the future!
