What kinds of editing services do you offer?
My editorial services include developmental editing, line editing, copy editing, and proofreading for fiction. For more information, see my developmental editing services and line and copy editing services. I also offer coaching services that cover brainstorming, writing, and revision.
Do you offer a sample edit?
Yes! I offer a sample edit at no cost to you. The goal is for you to get an idea of what my editing style is like; for me, it’s to get a good handle on where your manuscript is at, so I can recommend the right service and the most accurate cost and timeline estimates.
OK, let’s work together! What does the process look like?
The process is as straightforward as I can make it: We’ll discuss your manuscript and your goals, then I’ll do a sample edit to see where you’re at. I’ll use that sample edit to come up with the right service for you, whether it be a form of developmental edit or something more at the line/word level, and an estimated cost and timeline estimate. Once we’ve agreed on those details, you’ll sign my contract and pay a non-refundable deposit. Upon our project start date, just deliver your manuscript to me, and lay back and relax while I get to work!
I am radio-silent while working, which means you likely won’t hear from me during the timeline of the edit, unless I reach out with a question about the manuscript that’ll affect the edit. Once everything is complete, I’ll return the manuscript and send you an invoice for the final payment. All of my edits come with a follow-up Zoom call, and/or you can choose to communicate any questions you have via email. I am completely available to you after the edit, so always let me know if you’re having any trouble with revisions or brainstorming.
What does coaching entail?
Coaching is about having a conversation. Where my editing services cover work done on a completed manuscript, my coaching services exist outside of that as a separate process. We will have one-on-one video call sessions to discuss you, your writing, your strengths and challenges, and more to understand your project better, understand your process, and keep you accountable to your goals.
Coaching sessions are scheduled in advance via email, and each session’s topics will vary depending on where we’re at with your goals. They each last 1-1.5 hours total, and we’ll set some goals at the end for you to work on between sessions.
What platform will we use for coaching sessions?
Coaching sessions will be conducted via Zoom. I’ll send you all of the information (meeting ID, passcode, and secure link) in an email prior to our first coaching session.
How much does it cost to get my work edited?
The cost for editing varies depending on a number of factors: the service, the word count, the amount of time I’ll need to edit, and more. If you’d like an exact quote, please send me a message with more information about your project, including genre, length, and the kinds of edits you’re looking for.
How much does coaching cost?
My coaching services begin at $500 USD for a package of four sessions, with additional sessions and single-session packages available at $130 per session. More sessions and add-on services are available on request and will be an additional cost. I recommend contacting me to tell me more about what you’re hoping to get out of coaching in order to make sure we get the right package for you and your budget.
Do I have to sign a contract?
Yes. I sign contracts with all of my clients – these contracts outline the scope of services, the cost, the timeline, and other useful information about copyright, formatting, deadlines, what happens if one of us needs to cancel, etc. They’re a safety measure for the both of us, so we’re both clear about the project guidelines.
How do I pay for your services?
I invoice every project via Wave. You will receive an invoice for your records, and each emailed invoice will include a link to be paid online via credit card, debit card, or through direct deposit. All payments are securely processed and your payment information is never stored.
What’s your turnaround time for edits?
Turnaround time relies on a multitude of factors, including the length of the work, the editing service you request, your proposed turnaround time, and my current schedule. With smaller projects (< 5,000 words), I aim for 1-2 weeks. Longer projects (> 50,000 words) can take 4+ weeks to complete, depending on the total word count. A general rule of thumb is the earlier you book, the better, to ensure you have time for editing, revisions, and everything else on your schedule. Do you use generative AI in your editing?
Absolutely not. When you hire me, you’re hiring a human whose goal is using her own expertise to make your novel the best it can be. I am in this job because I just want to work with books all day, and figure out how to make your goals a reality. Generative AI like ChatGPT, Open AI, and others are built on stolen work, damage the environment in inconceivable ways, and cut away our beautiful abilities for critical and creative thinking. I simply will not be party to it.
How much experience do you have in editing?
I have been professionally editing for 7+ years. In addition to freelance editing via The Wallflower Editing, this experience comes from:
- earning my M.F.A. in Creative Writing;
- successfully completing of the University of Denver Publishing Institute;
- working as a freelancer for well-known traditional publishing houses, including Orbit/Redhook, Simon & Schuster, Sourcebooks, and Haymarket Books;
- working as a volunteer acquisitions reader for literary magazines such as Puerto del Sol, Noemi Press, and PRISM International;
- working as an editorial intern and editor at small publishing houses like REUTS Publishing and World Weaver Press.
